If you want to know the top tourist destinations in Spain that you can’t miss, this guide provides a list of essential places to visit in Spain. Not all of them are widely known, but I assure you they will surprise and enchant you equally, whether you’re here for sightseeing or to discover the hidden gems of our country.

Ready to uncover the best spots in Spain? Here’s a map with the main tourist attractions in Spain to help you plan your journey or discover those hidden gems waiting for you just around the corner.

ALHAMBRA OF GRANADA, A WONDER TO SEE IN SPAIN

Andalusia boasts a significant Muslim legacy that remains present to this day. Islam left a profound mark on Hispanic culture, particularly in architecture. The best example of this is the Alhambra of Granada, one of the must-visit sites in Spain at least once in a lifetime.

It is a complex of Nasrid palaces adorned with white marble columns and intricate mocárabe designs, once inhabited by sultans. Moreover, from there, you’ll behold the Sierra Nevada mountains and the city of Granada. Undoubtedly, it is a place you must see in Spain, no doubt about it. My favorite part is the Generalife gardens with its fountains, where you can travel back in time.

The Alhambra is so popular that if you want to secure a complete ticket, including access to the Nasrid Palaces, the Alcazaba, the Generalife gardens, and the Partal, I recommend buying your ticket months in advance, especially during the high season, as getting a ticket on the same day becomes nearly impossible. Don’t miss it on your journey through Southern Spain.

SEVILLE, ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN SPAIN

Seville is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain.

I recommend staying here for at least two days to fully enjoy everything this charming city has to offer. You’ll be amazed by the Giralda, a majestic Almohad tower that crowns the Cathedral and holds over 800 years of history.

SEVILLE, ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN SPAIN

The Plaza de España is another iconic landmark in Spain. It dates back to 1929 when architect Aníbal González designed it for the Ibero-American Exposition, yet it still retains its romantic allure. And, of course, take a stroll through the labyrinthine streets of the old Jewish quarter of Santa Cruz.

As you can see, there’s so much to explore in Seville, so I recommend purchasing tickets in advance for the Seville Cathedral, the Alcázar, and the Giralda. You can also admire some of the city’s most emblematic monuments, like the Torre del Oro or the Triana Bridge, with a boat trip along the famous Guadalquivir River.

TIMANFAYA NATIONAL PARK, LANZAROTE, A MUST-VISIT PLACE IN SPAIN

Timanfaya National Park will gift you with some of the best landscapes in Spain. For me, it’s not only one of the essential places to see in Lanzarote, but also one of the national parks in Spain that you can’t miss.

Venturing into this volcanic landscape feels like landing on the moon. There’s no doubt that it’s one of the top tourist attractions in Spain due to the stunning beauty of its geomorphological structures, primarily formed by the eruptions of 1730, 1736, and 1824.

TIMANFAYA NATIONAL PARK, LANZAROTE, A MUST-VISIT PLACE IN SPAIN

This hostile and arid landscape, filled with shades of red, black, ochre, and orange, looks as if it were a painting under the radiant blue sky.

HANGING HOUSES OF CUENCA, ONE OF THE MOST CURIOUS PLACES TO VISIT IN SPAIN

The Hanging Houses of Cuenca, or Casas del Rey, are a set of buildings with large balconies that protrude from the high rocky cliff of the Hoz del Huécar river. Their uniqueness makes them one of the top tourist attractions in Spain that you must visit at least once in your life.

HANGING HOUSES OF CUENCA, ONE OF THE MOST CURIOUS PLACES TO VISIT IN SPAIN

The best way to explore this UNESCO World Heritage city is with a local guide. And if you have time and feel like doing something different, you can visit the Enchanted City and the Source of the Río Cuervo, the two most famous natural monuments in the province of Cuenca, and truly enjoy one of the activities in Spain.

SAGRADA FAMILIA, BARCELONA, ONE OF THE MUST-VISIT TOURIST SITES IN SPAIN

If there’s one famous monument you have to see in Spain, it’s the Sagrada Familia. It’s the most popular temple in Barcelona and the pinnacle of Gaudí’s modernist architecture.

It’s true that it’s not even finished yet, but it remains one of the top attractions in Spain due to its architectural value. If you want to skip the long queues (I must warn you, they can last for hours depending on the day), I recommend getting your tickets in advance. The interior is also absolutely worth it.

SAGRADA FAMILIA, BARCELONA, ONE OF THE MUST-VISIT TOURIST SITES IN SPAIN

PARK GÜELL, BARCELONA, A PARK TO VISIT IN SPAIN THAT YOU’LL LOVE

And since we’re in Barcelona, let’s continue with another of Spain’s tourist attractions that must be on your list and was also designed by Antoni Gaudí: Park Güell.

PARK GÜELL, BARCELONA, A PARK TO VISIT IN SPAIN THAT YOU’LL LOVE

It’s an enormous garden with architectural elements that make it one of the top places to visit in Spain. To avoid queues, I recommend purchasing this ticket in advance.

PRADO NATIONAL MUSEUM, MADRID, A CULTURAL SPOT TO VISIT IN SPAIN

Continuing the list in the capital, Madrid, one of the must-visit cities in Spain. There are countless attractions to see in Madrid: plenty of entertainment options, excellent cuisine, culture, and incredible museums. In fact, the Prado National Museum is the most visited museum in Spain and is located in Madrid. With three million annual visitors and an online presence exceeding 10 million, getting lost in its galleries is something I recommend doing at least once in your lifetime.

Not only is it one of the most renowned museums in Spain but in the whole world. Here, you’ll find Goya’s Black Paintings and Velázquez’s Las Meninas, among other valuable works that make it one of the best places in Spain to admire art.

PRADO NATIONAL MUSEUM, MADRID, A CULTURAL SPOT TO VISIT IN SPAIN

To avoid the long queues, be sure to get this ticket. And if you plan to dedicate the day to art, take the opportunity to visit the Reina Sofía Museum, which is just a few minutes’ walk away.

ROMAN AQUEDUCT OF SEGOVIA, ONE OF SPAIN’S FINEST

The Roman Aqueduct of Segovia is one of Spain’s most significant monuments left by Roman engineering. Its construction dates back to the early 2nd century, with the purpose of bringing water from the Sierra to Segovia (although legend attributes it to the devil himself).

ROMAN AQUEDUCT OF SEGOVIA, ONE OF SPAIN’S FINEST

The city, apart from the Aqueduct, is beautiful and I recommend visiting it. Take the guided tour of Segovia Cathedral and treat yourself to a mouthwatering roasted suckling pig at Mesón de Cándido.

COVADONGA LAKES AND PICOS DE EUROPA, AMONG THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AREAS TO SEE IN SPAIN

Heading further north, we reach Covadonga Lakes and Picos de Europa, one of those beautiful places in Spain that you must visit at least once in your life. Once you do, you’ll surely want to come back.

COVADONGA LAKES AND PICOS DE EUROPA, AMONG THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AREAS TO SEE IN SPAIN

Covadonga was the first capital of the ancient Kingdom of Asturias and is one of the charming places in Spain due to its location. From there, you can hike up to the Lakes, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views and landscapes, along with encountering some Asturian cows along the way.

If you prefer not to drive to the lakes on your own, you can take this excursion from Cangas de Onís. It will allow you to explore the nature of the Picos de Europa National Park, one of the wildest places in Spain.

WINDMILLS OF LA MANCHA, AMONG THE BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN SPAIN

If you’re a literature enthusiast, you must be familiar with Don Quixote. That’s what makes the famous Windmills of La Mancha another must-visit place in Spain. It’s one of the sites in central Spain to see due to its cultural significance.

WINDMILLS OF LA MANCHA, AMONG THE BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN SPAIN

There are several windmills to explore, but I recommend the Windmills of Consuegra. They are one of the most charming places in Spain.

TEIDE NATIONAL PARK IN TENERIFE, THE TALLEST PEAK TO SEE IN SPAIN

Another one of the national parks to visit in Spain is Teide National Park in Tenerife. It not only boasts the tallest peak among all the Canary Islands but also in Spain.

Moreover, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it one of the must-visit places of interest in Spain. I recommend taking the cable car to ascend its 3,718 meters in height and marvel at the crater.

BURGOS CATHEDRAL, A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE TO SEE IN SPAIN

Burgos Cathedral is one of the most beautiful in the country and is a place of interest in Spain recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

BURGOS CATHEDRAL, A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE TO SEE IN SPAIN

Its construction began 800 years ago, in 1221, following French Gothic patterns. Throughout history, it has required countless restoration works, which have not only kept it alive but also added more and more details that make it unique. Undoubtedly, its splendid Gothic-Plateresque lantern tower and its two turrets stand out on the outside. Inside, you cannot miss the Main Altarpiece, the Chapel of the Constable, and the Golden Staircase.

ROMAN THEATRE OF MÉRIDA, ONE OF SPAIN’S MOST IMPORTANT MONUMENTS

Another great work left by the Romans, which has become one of Spain’s most important monuments, is the Roman Theatre of Mérida. It was ordered to be built under the sponsorship of Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus, between the years 16 and 15 BC.

ROMAN THEATRE OF MÉRIDA, ONE OF SPAIN’S MOST IMPORTANT MONUMENTS

So, it has been exposed to 2,000 years of weather and human impact, transforming into the architectural ruins we see today. Since 1993, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Mérida Archaeological Ensemble, making it clearly one of the places to visit in Spain.

If you want to learn more about the history of Hispania and visit, in addition to the Roman Theatre, other ruins such as the Arab Alcazaba, the Morerías archaeological area, the Casa del Anfiteatro, and the Roman Amphitheatre.

CITY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES IN VALENCIA, A PLACE FULL OF ACTIVITIES TO DO IN SPAIN

The City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia is a cultural and entertainment complex and one of Spain’s most touristy places.

CITY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES IN VALENCIA, A PLACE FULL OF ACTIVITIES TO DO IN SPAIN

This architectural complex was designed by the famous architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava and the late Félix Candela. Here, you will find some of the most popular activities in Spain right now.

If you get the complete ticket, you will have access to the Oceanogràfic, the largest aquarium in Europe; the Science Museum, with interactive exhibitions; and the Hemisfèric, Spain’s largest projection room.

MOSQUE-CATHEDRAL OF CÓRDOBA, ONE OF THE CHARMING PLACES IN SPAIN

The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is one of the most historical landmarks to visit in Spain. However, don’t let the name deceive you: it is currently known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady in an ecclesiastical context.

MOSQUE-CATHEDRAL OF CÓRDOBA, ONE OF THE CHARMING PLACES IN SPAIN

It is, along with the Alhambra, the most important monument of Andalusian architecture. Declared a Cultural Heritage Site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the city’s historic center, in 2007, it was voted by the public as one of the 12 Treasures of Spain. Moreover, it was awarded as the best tourist attraction in Europe and sixth in the world, according to a TripAdvisor contest. With all this, you’ll understand that it’s something you must see in Spain at least once in your lifetime.

THE WALLS OF ÁVILA, ONE OF THE PLACES TO SEE IN SPAIN FOR ITS BEAUTY

It’s impossible to visit Ávila and not see the majestic Walls of Ávila. It is one of the important monuments in Spain that you must see at least once, and it has even been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for being one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Spain.

THE WALLS OF ÁVILA, ONE OF THE PLACES TO SEE IN SPAIN FOR ITS BEAUTY

Two and a half kilometers of perimeter, 88 towers, nine gates, 12 meters in height, and an area of 33 hectares have made this monument in Spain a unique example of medieval European architecture.

BALEARIC ISLANDS, THE BEST PLACE TO VISIT IN SPAIN DURING SUMMER

If you’re looking for places to visit in Spain during the summer, the Balearic Islands are undoubtedly one of your best choices. They comprise Mallorca, Menorca, Cabrera, Ibiza, and Formentera, as well as other islets such as Dragonera, Conejera, or Espalmador.

They are some of the beautiful places to visit in Spain due to their landscapes and beaches. It’s no wonder they are the third autonomous community in Spain that receives the most visitors, both domestic and international.

BALEARIC ISLANDS, THE BEST PLACE TO VISIT IN SPAIN DURING SUMMER

The capital and most populated city is Palma de Mallorca.

Ibiza is known worldwide for its party scene, but it has much more to offer. Over two hours, you will get to know the history and secrets of this locality. From its foundation in the year 654, pirates, Romans, and Muslims have passed through here. And from there… to becoming the capital of European nightlife.

The other island I recommend you visit is Menorca. It has beautiful beaches and coves, as well as remains of the Talayotic culture. But it also has a very important cultural aspect. Take a stroll through Ciutadella, visit Mount Toro and La Mola Fortress, go to Mahón, and if you can, take a boat ride to discover the best coves.

VISITING THE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM IN BILBAO, ONE OF THE BEST ACTIVITIES TO DO IN SPAIN

Bilbao is one of the must-visit places in northern Spain. The city boasts one of Spain’s most significant cultural attractions: the Guggenheim Museum.

Inaugurated in 1997, it marked a turning point for the city. As you approach, you’ll see ‘Puppy’ guarding the building—a stunning floral dog sculpture and one of the city’s most famous works of art.

VISITING THE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM IN BILBAO, ONE OF THE BEST ACTIVITIES TO DO IN SPAIN

The museum, designed by architect Frank Gehry, represents a pinnacle of 20th-century avant-garde architecture, making it one of the most popular places to visit in Spain.

If you can, check it out at sunset—the play of lights is beautiful. Inside, there are over 24,000 square meters, with 10,500 dedicated to exhibitions. You’ll find collections from local artists like Eduardo Chillida and international ones like Rothko or Yoko Ono.

It’s best to buy your tickets online as they are cheaper and will save you from unnecessary queues.

TOLEDO, ONE OF SPAIN’S MOST HISTORIC SITES

Toledo is another beautiful place to visit in Spain. Known as the City of the Three Cultures, here you’ll find some of the best activities to do in Spain. Personally, I recommend that you don’t leave without seeing the Toledo Cathedral, one of the most impressive in the world; the Mirador del Valle, from which you can enjoy a sunset view; the Alcántara Bridge; or the Monastery of San Juan, with over 500 years of history.

TOLEDO, ONE OF SPAIN’S MOST HISTORIC SITES

If you want to explore the city thoroughly, I advise you to get the Toledo Card. It allows you to skip the lines at the main monuments in the city and includes a guided tour of the Cathedral.

PLAYA DE LAS CATEDRALES, LUGO – ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES TO SEE IN SPAIN

The Playa de Las Catedrales, also known as the Beach of the Holy Waters, is located in Lugo. It earned its tourist name due to its formations, such as arches, that resemble those of a Gothic cathedral when the tide is low.

PLAYA DE LAS CATEDRALES, LUGO – ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES TO SEE IN SPAIN

Considered one of the best beaches in Spain, it’s a must-visit spot in the north. The only issue with visiting during holidays (such as Easter or the summer months from July to September) is that you need to request prior authorization since access is limited.

The Playa de las Catedrales is situated in the area known as Mariña Lucense, another place to visit in Spain during the summer. It is characterized by green meadows that give way to rocky formations pounded by the Cantabrian Sea. You’ll be delighted by its spectacular landscape.

CAMINO DE SANTIAGO, SOMETHING TO DO IN SPAIN AT LEAST ONCE IN A LIFETIME

Undoubtedly, the Camino de Santiago is one of the most popular hiking routes in Spain. Some people do it on foot, others by bike, and there are even those who run it. Whichever method you choose, I promise it will be a unique experience.

Moreover, the Camino de Santiago will take you through some of the best places to visit in Spain. Or rather, its routes, as there are several that lead to the tomb of St. James the Greater, located in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

CAMINO DE SANTIAGO, SOMETHING TO DO IN SPAIN AT LEAST ONCE IN A LIFETIME

It’s true that the itinerary of this Christian pilgrimage route, with its medieval origins, starts from the western Pyrenees. However, nowadays, it is mostly used to refer to the various Jacobean routes. Embarking on this journey will allow you to meet fellow pilgrims along the way and enjoy some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.

CABO DE GATA BEACHES, ALMERÍA, SPAIN’S BEST-KEPT TREASURE

The Natural Park of Almería offers paradisiacal landscapes. It’s an oasis amidst the desert landscape of agave plants, with its fine sandy beaches and turquoise blue waters that make them the best plan to enjoy in Spain during the summer. But of course, what can I tell you if I’m from there and it has been my home for so many years!

So trust me. Grab your beach umbrella, sunscreen, snorkeling goggles, a well-stocked cooler with cold drinks and some food, and visit the best beaches of Cabo de Gata, an ideal place to see in Spain during the summer.

CABO DE GATA BEACHES, ALMERÍA, SPAIN’S BEST-KEPT TREASURE

From my side, I highly recommend you visit Cala Rajá and the Arrecife de Las Sirenas in Cabo de Gata, and Playa de los Genoveses and Mónsul in San José. Although there are many other beautiful beaches.

And speaking of San José, take the opportunity to go kayaking and snorkeling in its beaches. It’s the perfect way to discover the towns and cliffs of Cabo de Gata, as well as its marine life underwater.

DOÑANA NATIONAL PARK, A NATURAL SPACE TO EXPLORE IN SPAIN

According to the Government of Spain, Doñana National Park “is a mosaic of ecosystems that harbors a unique biodiversity in Europe.” And in my opinion, it is one of the most beautiful places to see in Spain.

DOÑANA NATIONAL PARK, A NATURAL SPACE TO EXPLORE IN SPAIN

Undoubtedly, it is one of the best national parks in Spain. Located between the provinces of Huelva, Seville, and Cádiz (Andalusia), this park is home to unique species such as the Iberian lynx, the imperial eagle, or the spur-thighed tortoise. Situated between two continents and close to the point where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean converge, the Strait of Gibraltar, there is no other place in the world like it.

RONDA AND CAMINITO DEL REY, AMONG THE BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN SPAIN

Ronda is known as the ‘dream city’ of Andalusia and one of the beautiful sites to see in Spain. You won’t have any doubts about why Ronda is considered one of the most picturesque towns in Spain.

RONDA AND CAMINITO DEL REY, AMONG THE BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN SPAIN

You’ll stroll along Ernest Hemingway’s Promenade and understand why there’s a sculpture in honor of the American writer. You’ll also get to see the emblematic balconies of the hanging houses, perched on a gorge over 150 meters deep.

If you’re up for more activity, not too far away is the Caminito del Rey, one of the best hiking routes in Spain.

EL ESCORIAL, A COMPLEX WITH RICH HISTORY AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SITES IN SPAIN

The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is one of Spain’s most significant monuments, representing the pinnacle of ideological and cultural aspirations during the country’s ‘Golden Century,’ the 16th century.

EL ESCORIAL, A COMPLEX WITH RICH HISTORY AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SITES IN SPAIN

This complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you’ll find a convent, the Royal Palace of Philip II, a pantheon where some of the monarchs who once resided in the palaces are buried, and an impressive library with thousands of ancient books.

If you want to learn more about this stunning monastery and, at the same time, visit the Valley of the Fallen and learn a bit more about the history of the Spanish Civil War, I recommend taking an excursion.

SALAMANCA, ONE OF THE MOST ENCHANTING PLACES IN SPAIN

The Cathedral, the Plaza Mayor, the Casa de las Conchas… Salamanca is one of the central cities in Spain that you must see for its great cultural interest. Since 1998, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to the oldest university in the country.

SALAMANCA, ONE OF THE MOST ENCHANTING PLACES IN SPAIN

It is also one of the top tourist attractions in Spain due to its remarkable monuments. If you don’t want to miss anything, take this free tour. They will guide you through the Plaza del Corrillo, help you find the hidden figures on the façade of its university, show you the impressive architecture of the New Cathedral, and end at the Episcopal Palace, which houses the Historical Museum of Salamanca.

I must admit that, for me, it is the most beautiful city in Castile and León, beyond being one of the interesting places in Spain that you should visit.

ENJOYING THE BEACH IN WINTER IN THE CANARY ISLANDS, ONE OF THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN SPAIN

When it comes to what to see in Spain in winter, my recommendation is to consider visiting the Canary Islands. It is one of my favorite tourist destinations in Spain because of its climate (mild all year round), its landscapes, and its beaches.

Keep in mind that the average temperature hovers around 20 degrees Celsius, and it rarely rains, making it the perfect weather for sightseeing and discovering its volcanic nature.

ENJOYING THE BEACH IN WINTER IN THE CANARY ISLANDS, ONE OF THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN SPAIN

VISITING SAN SEBASTIAN, ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES TO SEE IN SPAIN

San Sebastian is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. One of its great charms is La Concha Beach, which is a must on our list of the best beaches in Spain.

However, undoubtedly, the most visited place in the city is its Old Town, the origin of what San Sebastian is today. Visit the Constitution Square and the colorful buildings that surround it. Also, the Alameda del Boulevard, the nerve center for shopping and a connection to the newer part of Donostia. It’s best to take this free tour to learn all about its history.

VISITING SAN SEBASTIAN, ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES TO SEE IN SPAIN

Another great attraction of this city is its gastronomy. Eating here is not exactly cheap, but you will enjoy it. Especially because it has the best “pintxos” in the country.
